The music and multi-media performing arts group BASILICA has organized a 6-hour multi-media installation for the ORANJE 2009 Contemporary Art and Music Exhibition. This epic production will feature over 20 musicians and 20 dancers giving continuous performances that will include a vast array of interactive audio and video technology. Performances will be given by BASILICA, music and arts technology faculty from Indiana University Bloomington and Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, dance faculty from Butler University, the electro-acoustic improvisation ensemble Goodhands Team, and more. Audience participation will be welcomed and encouraged!

Since 2002, ORANJE has sought to create an interactive experience of art and music in a stimulating environment in which the audience is invited to indulge their senses. At ORANJE 2009, BASILICA will realize these goals in an immersive environment of sound and light that will stimulate and engage not only the human senses of sight and sound but also those uniquely human sensibilities of psychology and intellect, thought and emotion. The outdoor enclosure in which the installation will be constructed will encourage the audience to cultivate not only an intimacy with the performers, who will be staged in various locations throughout the space, but also an intimacy with themselves and with each other as they move through the interactive audio and video displays.

The entrance to the installation will feature the elaborate abstract artwork of Christian Fillippo. This expressive entrance calls the sensual and psychological attention of the exhibit’s entrants in a way similar to the entrance to a Balinese Hindu temple in Indonesia. Like the Balinese temples, the installation itself is a location where the arts are celebrated and where the senses, emotions, and thoughts of both the performers and the audiences are fully engaged through total immersion.
